COVID especially showed us the importance of mental wellbeing. In many ways, it showed us our greatest fears and deepest worries. And thus, defines how we experience life. A lot of us have been feeling scared, worried, sad, trapped, lost and overwhelmed due to this pandemic. Those states of mind then translated into all other areas of life and made us feel like we are not ourselves and don’t know where we really belong. There’s been a lot of uncertainty and worry causing us headaches and states of mental unwell being. Today I want to talk more about the importance of mental wellbeing and how it affects our experience of life and how we can use COVID as an opportunity to take care of ourselves.
Mental wellbeing describes the state of mind we are in on a daily basis. Our mindset can either be neutral, positive or negative. If it is neutral we often speak about a non-judgmental, open minded and present mindset. Basically, we do not feel affected in any way by what is happening or what has happened or will happen in past or future. We are entirely present and all consumed by the present moment activity. We do not worry at all and feel a deep sense of contentment steaming from the all-consuming activity of the present moment.
A positive state of mind occurs when we are deeply rooted in ourselves and our life, when we feel aligned and happy with where we are and what we are doing right now. It also steams from those all-consuming flow activities that generate joy and excitement, but it can also come from an overall flow experience in life. When things just fit together and we are genuinely positive in the way we think and perceive the world. Then a negative mindset comes from all those fears, worries and doubts that we allow to control our mind. This is the most unproductive mindset to be in. Because it affects the way we feel negatively.
But mental wellbeing goes far beyond our thoughts, it also relates to the way we feel. And since both our thoughts and feelings are intertwined and affect one another you can basically see mental wellbeing as the overall state in which our inner world finds itself. This world can either be full of peace and joy or full of negativity and chaos depending on where our thoughts and emotions are at this current point in time.
If we find ourselves in a world full of chaos and negativity because our thoughts and emotions are dominated by negativity we will experience everything that happens to us negatively as well. There is a model called the thought model that states that circumstances in life enter the consciousness as neutral information and only through our consciousness which is responsible for processing this information it either becomes positive (valuable information) or negative (disrupting information) this categorization will then be communicated further to the cells which are responsible for sensational responses such as emotions. Positive thought causes positive emotions, negative thought causes negative emotion. Those emotions then affect the way we act, e.g. reserved vs. outgoing, angry vs. understanding, cruel vs. loving. These actions combined with the feelings we have cause the result aka our reality and how we experience it.
This whole cycle can be seen as the cycle of mental wellbeing. Either way if we feel bad or think bad our mental state becomes negative and thus our reality too. And because our inner state of mind has such a great impact on our experience of life and also how we show up it is important to take care of this mental wellbeing and make sure that the positive state is dominant.

While many people suspect that life is what defines our reality and think our life is the sum of the circumstances happening to us, the opposite is true. Life is an absolutely subjective experience. The reality you experience is entire defined by how your mind evaluates information entering its consciousness. This means, the situation or circumstance itself does not play much role in shaping your reality but rather the way you interpret it matters to how you experience it and whether or not it makes you happy or not. People you have managed to build a happy and exciting life haven’t had luck or any of that, they simply learned to master their minds so that they no longer let circumstances affect their state of mind and rather learned to evaluate them in a positive and productive way. In other words, they have learned to take care of their emotional and mental wellbeing and learned to use it to improve their experience of life. But the good thing is, your mental wellbeing is much easier to control and work on than luck is so there is still hope for you and your happy life, no matter the current circumstances.
If COVID had one good thing then it is for sure the fact that it showed the importance of taking care of your mental wellbeing. No one of us can control COVID or the consequences it has on our lives and we are all affected by it. Some more, some less. However, it gives us a great opportunity to learn to increase our mental wellbeing and not let circumstances affect our state of mind. Like with everything this is a journey and we will fail sometimes and there will be days where we feel more affected by COVID than on others, but in general you can use any threat you feel resulting from this pandemic as an opportunity to train your mind into seeing it from a positive, growth oriented perspective.
You can learn to be grateful for what you have instead of feeling sad for what you lost. You can also brainstorm what advantages the situation brings to you instead of thinking about what it took away from you. And an even better way to use this pandemic to make a change towards better mental health and personal growth is to hire a life coach or mentor.
Coaches and mentors are support systems that help us to make a change in our lives, that help us to get unstuck and learn to evolve and move past our current paradigm. Working with a coach or mentor in such a time can be not only a great way to get back on track but also an amazing opportunity to use all the potential for growth and happiness and creating your DreamLife that is within this pandemic.
