Whether or not you are successful with your dreams comes down to many things. Some within and some outside of your control. However, there are a few things you can do to set yourself up for success and one of them is to create habits around the actions that help you achieve your goals. This we call the power of streak.
Some time ago I had a conversation with my brother. We talk all things business, success and greatness all the time. As each one of us is different and works differently, we all have unique approaches to goal setting and motivation as well. Yet both of us found that doing something in a consistent way generates something magical. An energy that carries you forward. It generates momentum.
I’ve been studying successful people all my life and all of them mention the times when they made the biggest jumps in their career was when they had momentum. Momentum is the force that makes you move forward and upward at such a rapid pace that you can see your dreams manifest in front of your eyes. Most people think momentum is luck and good timing and sure that plays into it but most of the momentum people have is self-generated. And today I want to show you how you can generate that momentum for yourself.
The law of momentum is quite easy. It states that you need to do something long enough and consecutively aka collect streaks in one specific activity that helps you move forward with your goals. The longer you do it the more momentum you get.
So far so good. That’s not everything though. The key aspect of momentum is that you are motivated and that you are seeing results. Well if you keep making streaks maintaining the streak becomes the goal and the motivation in itself, which means that you will do the activity just to keep the streak and thus not loose motivation or stop performing the action. And because you take action consistently over a long period of time you will see results. By the time momentum declines (which is totally normal, everything in life is an ebb and flow), you will have created a habit, which means you are most likely going to keep performing the action while dedicating your energy and attention to creating momentum with a new action.
There’s one down side to the power of streak though. I used to be an all or nothing person. It came easy to me to be consistent and disciplined and keep streaks. And it sure had its advantages, you’re dedicated and committed, you follow through and you usually achieve lots of things. However, it had also negative sides to it like burnout and stuff like that. At some point I was so obsessed with creating momentum that keeping the streak lead me to create habits that weren’t good for me and lead me to break down. So It is very important to keep the balance to take breaks and understand that momentum is something that comes and goes and that is okay.
I definitely believe in the power of habit and the power of streak but I do believe as well that one can come back from breaking the streak if one is only dedicated and committed enough. We all need breaks and just because you take one doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It’s about structuring your habits into periods as well and set many goals and once you’ve achieved a mini goal or completed a period you need to take a break and then come back to the habit and continue the streak. It’s like pressing the pause button and putting it on hold so you can recharge.
Also it is important to know when the streak is complete. So before going on this journey know how many streaks you need. Make it challenging but achievable and then generate that momentum and motivation. Once the streak is complete be easier on yourself. Know that it is okay to take breaks and trust that you will come back to it because you have created a habit. Then pick a new action to generate streaks and momentum. And restart the cycle once you feel energized enough.
Also know that momentum is not tied to one specific action. You can generate momentum towards your goals with any action. It doesn’t matter which one only that it is productive and effective.
